Storage is a must to maintain the life of your fur and other
fine outerwear. The question most commonly asked is... Can i
keep my fur in the basement or closet for the summer, do
i really have to store it? The answer is yes you really do
need to store your coats. The storage helps prolong the life of
your fur, in some cases preserving it up to 50 or 60 years. A
coat that has not been treated properly will deteriorate, a
process that can not be reversed once it takes affect.
The fur storage vaults are designed to address many conditions that
are vital to the life of your furs.
A furriers storage vault maintains at a cool 45 degrees
providing constant air circulation, while controling the
humidity level at 50 percent. Although your basement may be
cool, the moisture level there is the highest and will dry out your
coat faster than any other element. Storage vaults also
provide protection from insects and light.
Moths and other insects can cause severe damage to your coats,
making tiny holes, or worst, nesting their eggs into your
coat. Moth balls should never ever be used to protect your
furs from moths, the scent adheres to the garment and
makes your fur smell awful. Removing the smell of moth balls can be
a time consuming and costly process. Multiple cleanings and several
months in an ozone room may remove the smell if performed promptly.
Also, the smell can transfer to other garments preventing them from
being stored near other clients coats. Many customers now
have cedar closets and air conditioners in their homes, although
this will protect from moths, the stagnant air and lack of humidity
control will cause the fur to lose its natural oils and stiffen the
leather.
Sunlight or household lights will cause your fur to
oxidize. Keeping your fur in a home closet, with exposure to
light, will cause uneven color change. This means white fur
will turn yellow, dyed furs will lose their colors, and all furs
will fade. Storage vaults are kept dark and have no sunlight
access, thus preventing oxidation.
